Rifampicin is an antibiotic medication primarily used in the treatment of bacterial infections, including tuberculosis (TB) and certain other infections caused by bacteria such as Mycobacterium leprae (the bacteria that cause leprosy) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Rifampicin works by inhibiting the activity of bacterial RNA polymerase, thus preventing the transcription of RNA and ultimately leading to the death of the bacteria. It is often used in combination with other antibiotics to treat TB and other bacterial infections. Rifampicin is typically taken orally in capsule or tablet form, but it is also available in injectable formulations.
